Rev. Mike Groos
Mike has served as the Pastor of Recreation Ministries at Mandarin United Methodist Church since 2014. He served as Director of Recreation Ministries at Mandarin UMC from 2009-2014.
Mike attended the University of Texas at Austin receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of West Florida. Before joining the MUMC staff, Mike was a lieutenant in the United States Navy, retired as Corporate Comptroller from St. Joe Paper Company after twenty-two years, and worked for Watson Realty as internal auditor for twelve years before retiring to join the Mandarin UMC staff.
Mike has worked with the Upward Sports program at Mandarin UMC since its beginning in 2000. He has seen it grow from 60 children participating in basketball and cheerleading in the first year to 850 children who currently participate in basketball, cheerleading and soccer throughout the year. His love of sports and of sharing his faith makes interacting with the children and families who participate in Upward a highlight of Mike’s life.
Mike has been married to Patti, a retired Duval County middle school teacher, since 1969. They have two children: Wendy Gilbert, married to Todd with three children (daughters Sarah and Molly and son Sam) and David Groos, married to Lori with four daughters (Amber, Delani, Kairi and Bekah). They are blessed to have their children and grandchildren all living in Jacksonville.
