Why We Give

What people say

Why: Because I pay bills for my own home and understand it takes money, planning and budgeting to make the “house” run. I love our church and all the love it gives and services to the community. I know helping in the small way we do contributes to making that happen

I give for several reasons. One reason I give is because I know that without contributions, we would not be able to have this wonderful church community that is so dear to my heart. It truly takes a village. I know that there is a real difference that is made when I give, because when added to others’ gifts, together we can all make miracles happen, as well as simply keep the church doors open and the buildings operating. Also, I see giving to the church as fundamental to being a church member; I view it as a sacred part of my responsibility as a church member. Finally, I give because this church has made such a positive difference in my life, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to be able to give back.

Since elementary school I have made it to church by my Great Aunt & Uncle, friends and my bicycle. My gifts have always been my prayers of thanksgiving (making the teenage years better), my presence, my gifts (music) and my service (in & outside the church). Fortunately I married someone who had better financial sense and has been very deliberate in our giving to the financial needs of the church.

Proverbs 3:9-10 instructs us to honor the Lord with our first and best fruits. Romans 12:13 describes that one of the marks of a true Christian is to contribute to the needs of the Saints. In our giving, we show our gratitude to the Lord for all He has done for us. In our giving, we become instruments for the Lord’s work to touch the lives of others. So why do we give? Because it is the right thing to do for the advancement of the kingdom and the fulfillment of the Great Commission. We give for the glory of God.

We give to support our church family and its ministries here in our community and around the world. We have benefitted from the blessings of music ministry, children & youth ministries and Upward ministries.

In one of the old Nooma videos, Rob Bell makes a comparison between households in most of the world that have no car or maybe 1 car and households in the U.S., where we have 2 or 3 cars or more. That really made an impression on me. I found myself thinking, what does ‘give all you can’ as John Wesley instructs us to do look like in my ‘rich’ 2-car household?

We give because we are so blessed with a great array of worship and giving activities. Specifically, we are participants in the young choirs as a musical director and in the Upward basketball program as a coach, referee and organizer. These activities provide a service to the church and give us a tremendous sense of ‘giving back’ feeling. We get more back than we give, no doubt!
